Nice old Hohner piano accordion. This is a small model with 12 basses. It weighs only 9 pounds so delightful to hold and play compared to standard size piano accordions weighing in at 15 or 20 or more pounds. This was made in Germany. It is in excellent condition overall. The white pearloid covered wood case is in very good shape with slight wear and no missing trim pieces. Often the corner decorations are missing. The original bellows are decent but do show signs of slight wear on the tape from use where the instrument rests on your knee.
It has 15 white keys, 10 black keys and 12 bass buttons. The treble, & chord zinc reed plates have the ‘H’ marking. The large bass reeds have the ‘T’ marking. It has steel reeds. The original leather one way valves were all removed and replaced with modern plastic one way valves for long trouble free life. All reedplates were removed, cleaned, coarse tuned in a fixture then rewaxed onto the reed blocks. Final tuning occurs in situ with the reedblocks inside the case.
As the photos show, the plastic grill is in good shape with no breaks. The front grill cloth has small rips but hard to see. The rear screen is original and has two holes where curious fingers punched through. The keyboard is intact with no cracks or missing pieces and keys are level. The bass strap looks okay and may be original, both bellows straps have been replaced and now have ‘keeper’ snaps added. It has shoulder strap brackets. No shoulder straps are included.
Most of these older Hohner accordions are found with numerous notes out of tune, wheezing or not sounding at all. This was just fully tuned. There are 160 reeds in this instrument and every single one has been tuned. The treble reeds were tuned with a tremolo beat frequency of approximately 2 Hz at the low notes gradually rising to about 5 Hz at the high notes, for a sweet tremolo. The bass and chords were tuned ‘flat’.
