Restored Hohner 4 stop button accordion in the key of C. This was made in Germany in the Hohner factory. It is in good condition overall. The black and gold painted wood case is in good shape but shows normal wear for an instrument of this age. The original bellows are airtight and have silver, red and gold taped edges. One bellows gasket had a leak and has been replaced. The bass side handle box (with the spoons) has had a new foam gasket fitted. It has 10 treble buttons and 2 bass spoons. The bass spoons and air spoon lever have been repadded with felt cushioned leather. The treble, chord and bass reeds are steel on individual aluminum plates and have the ‘T’ marking.
I have special tuned this instrument with Cajun style flatted thirds. It has LOW, MID1, MID2, HIGH reeds each with a stop. The L,M1 & H reeds are all tuned the same for a very sweet Cajun sound. The M2 reed is tuned slightly sharp from the M1 reed and gives a pleasant tremolo when engaged. I Final tuning occurs in situ with the reedblocks attached to the soundboard.
As the photo shows, the metal grill is in nice shape with no dents or missing pieces. The grill cloth is good. The plastic keyboard is good except where the thumb strap attaches. There had been an earlier attempt at a repair. The original hole for the rivet that holds on the thumbstrap had cracked. I have mounted a steel plate around the hole to support it and prevent further cracking. It is screwed directly to the plastic keyboard with an internal screw and tapped hole in the steel plate. A new 1/4-20 stud with flat head has been mounted in a central hole in the steel plate for a very robust attachment. This also provides easy replacement if a new thumbstrap is desired.
The bass and bellows straps are all original and functional.
Most of these older Hohner accordions are found with numerous notes out of tune, wheezing or not sounding at all. This was just fully tuned. There are 90 reeds in this instrument and every single one has been tuned.
