Very nice condition walnut wood Castagnari Tommy in DG for sale. Comes with new European Design Stagg gig bag and one original strap. Just tuned. This is a very compact 3 voice LMM instrument with a stop for the low reeds.
I have made one fully reversible modification. I felt the distance from the outer row of button to the edge of the keyboard was too short. I have carefully made a poplar wood extension. The back edge was made with a convex profile to match the existing keyboard’s concave finger groove. The outer edge of the extension has a deeper concave surface and it is angled downward a bit like some of the older Hohner keyboards. The top of the extension is level with and coplanar with the top of the existing keyboard. I flared out the edges to give more length attempting to match the style. Please see photo. I used double sided foam tape between the instrument and the extension. The extension and tape can be removed if desired but I feel this is an improvement overall and am selling it in place.
Another improvement is that I have added a tubular aluminum crossbar tying the tops of the 3 reedblocks together. This modification minimizes unwanted oscillations on some notes that can occur without it. Most new Castagnari instruments come with this as standard. This box was made in 2000 before Castagnari routinely added them. The Tommy model is still available and is priced around $3300 new.
In some ways this is better than new as the bellows are worked in nicely and supple in use. The reeds have had a few years to settle in and I have just tuned all the treble reeds. The MM reeds are tuned with a tremolo beat frequency of 1 Hz low notes to 2 or 3 Hz high notes. This is slightly ‘wetter’ than a standard Castagnari but much drier than other instruments like Hohners.
